Where do you get your protein? Clapbacks for New Vegans

Where do you get your protein? Clapbacks for New Vegans

What is the dumbest thing someone said to you about being or thinking about becoming vegan? I have decided to write down the silliest things my friends and relatives have said to me about what I eat and consume and what I said or wished I said. This is definitely a little therapy for me but I hope it helps other people stand their ground with animal agriculture horror deniers.

Starting with OF COURSE :

WhAt aBoUt pRotEin?
Contrary to popular belief there is quite a bit of protein in fruits, vegetables and grains. If you don’t have a dead animal on your plate it leaves a lot more room for more of those! Where do the animals you’re eating get protein from?
How much protein is in that dead body on your plate?

WoW, tHaT’s sTriCt!
Huh, I think six months in quarantine due to a pandemic caused by people eating animals is a LOT more strict.
Making a living creature die every time you’re hungry is pretty strict.

BuT tHoSe pLaNt bAsEd bUrgErs sTilL aReN’t gOoD fOr yOu.
They’re still a lot better for you, animals and the environment than a cow carcass!

BuT cHeEsE!
(Full disclosure I was a bUt cHeEse! vegetarian once but have now seen the error in my ways)
Yes, of course how could you give up moldy cow pus designed for a baby calf?
You are right, I miss when my food involved rape and abandonment.

HaTe tO bReAk iT to yOu, plAnTs hAvE fEeLiNgs.
Wow, you must be really upset since your food has to eat plants with feelings so you can eat an animal with feelings.

WhAt aBoUt b12?
Do you eat a lot of soil? Because that’s where b12 is. That animal you’re eating doesn’t have enough b12 for you either.
My favorite condiment has 500% of the daily suggested b12 and I’m sure you have never heard of it.

YoU eAt fIsH rIgHt?
Nope, I don’t eat anything that comes from something that has taken a poop.

YoU mUsT bE sO hEaLtHy.
Sure, but only because I don’t think it’s right to abuse animals and the environment for tAsTe.
(I feel like when people think it’s for health reasons they push back on the lie that the animal agriculture is okay.)

WhAt iF yOu wErE gOiNg tO dIe?
I’d have some cute animal company before kicking the bucket.

My cUltUrE!
No culture is going to survive climate change if we all continue to live the lives we are living. Someone has already figured out a way to make your cultures food in a cruelty free way.

OrGaNiC, gRaSsFed, hUmAnElY sLaUgHtEred, lIvEd tHe gOoD lIfe fOoD oNlY!
It’s an animal that instead of being able to live a full life has died because you like the taste of it.

BuT iN mOdErAtIoN aNyThInG iS oKaY.
Sure but humans don’t do moderation well. Moderation is eating meat twice a week like climate change scientists have suggested. Unless you’re recording every calorie it’s hard to remember what you ate. It’s easy to just hang up the meat cutting board and stop.

I’m tRyIng tO bE pLaNt bAsEd.
It’s not hard, just put down the cow pus, carcasses and pick up a vegetable.

AnImAl cRuElTy iS bAd! (While being a meat eater)
Wait until you find out what they did to make that sandwich you’re eating.

ToFu hAs tOo mUcH eStRoGeN.
While you’re googling how much estrogen is in tofu check on the antibiotics chickens and cows are fed.

WhAt dO yOu eVeN eAt?
I find it so sad that you can’t even think of one meal without animal products in it.

It’S vEgAn wItH a lItTlE bIt oF pRoTeIn.
Yes, vegetables have protein but you mean chicken so that is not vegan.

Black History Movies to Watch for Independence Day

Black History Movies to Watch for Independence Day

Instead of celebrating July 4th this year I’ve chosen to continue on my journey of educating myself about the struggle imposed every day on the average Black American. I have to add I’m not currently living in the United States of America where I am a citizen so it is easier for me to choose to not celebrate.

July 4th is “Independence Day” in the United States but this year I realized how many people were not given independence on this day. It should be called white independence day. All Black Americans did not see their freedom until June 19th, 1865. Even still Black and other non-white Americans are not given the same freedoms as their white peers.

To facilitate understanding into the lives of Black Americans movies and documentaries have been produced for the consumption of all people. We do not get to learn these things in school but that does not mean we shouldn’t learn them. As a white American I am privileged enough to watch movies to find out the oppression of other Americans instead of experiencing it first hand. We must hold these stories in our minds in every step we take to ensure a brighter future. As a country we have to stand together and the FIRST step is to learn who the oppressed and oppressors are.

I’ve put together a list of the movies and documentaries I’ve watched lately that really spoke to me and made me think of the world from other points of view. Don’t just put these important films on in the background, these are tools the Black Community has created that we all need to pay attention too. I encourage people while watching these to pause them and reflect as much as possible. Maybe even watch with a journal to write down new ideas and things you felt strongly about.

I firmly believe in order to save the world from climate destruction we have to start with inclusion. Throwing money at causes is not working, we must dismantle the horribly outdated system and the start of that is to know how it works. Once we stabilize the system so all individuals are thriving we can then more efficiently tackle the climate change disasters happening right now.

13th, 2016
Everything you need to know about the systemic racism in the police force and jail system. From the civil war to today this film truly shows how America has been constantly evolving to oppress Black Americans. With every win there is a hidden and horrible loss. This is a must watch documentary.

When They See Us, 2019
This series based on true events tells the story of the five boys falsely accused and found guilty of an attack on a white woman in Central Park in 1989. So incredibly sad what happened to these boys but we must learn their stories in full. These things happen every day and to stand up for Black Americans we need to know each of their stories.

BlackkKlansmen, 2018
This drama based on a true story shows how two undercover police officers infiltrate the KKK and stop violence attempted at the Black community. Remember the KKK is still active and not considered a terrorist group. Those people still walk the streets with hate in their eyes.

I Am Not Your Negro, 2016
This captivating documentary is inspired by the notes and unfinished manuscript of James Baldwin, civil rights leader in 1957. He accounts the lives and deaths of his friends and other civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, and Medgar Evers as well as the history of racism in the United States.

The Hate U Give, 2018
This story shows the reality too many Black communities experience, a member being killed by a police officer. We watch a young woman stand up for her beliefs while being pulled in opposite directions.

Just Mercy, 2019
The true story of lawyer Bryan Stevenson defending Walter McMillian from being sentenced to death with no evidence against him.

Time: The Kalief Browder Story, 2017
This heart wrenching documentary mini series is a must watch to understand young Black Americans role in the judicial system. Kalief dedicated his life to exposing the horrors of being innocent and stuck in the system. We also get a look at Kalief’s amazing mother, Venida who is a true hero. Raising and adopting foster children, standing up for them when no one else would and becoming a civil rights activist while the pillars around her are crumbling. This story is very important to know, it’s sad so many people had to lose their lives before being heard.

These are a few suggestions to further understanding but should not be the end of learning whatsoever. Follow Black writers, bloggers, directors and other influences to find more valuable tools to becoming a better ally. Black America needs help now, and silence is absolutely violence. Stand up for what is right with tough conversations and showing these points of view. If the people you love think differently it’s not something to sweep under the rug. Make it uncomfortable for friends and family to be racist by always reminding them how they are wrong.

Easy Way To Help The Planet, Ditch Sandwich Bags

Easy Way To Help The Planet, Ditch Sandwich Bags

Plastic pollution is a crisis, it never biodegrades and is made from harmful chemicals. When this type of plastic ends up in a landfill or is incinerated it releases a toxic chemical, called dioxin. If it ends up in our oceans it is dangerous to wildlife that only see food. Luckily there are many alternatives to using unsustainable products.

Plastic feels almost unavoidable. My food is wrapped in plastic, my clothes have it woven into the fibers, my computer, my tea kettle, my phone, my dogs toys all have a bits of plastic. How can we avoid it if it’s everywhere. Sometimes avoiding it isn’t possible and for those times I use the plastic items until they’re completely unusable, try to fix it or re-purpose then recycle, donate or toss. When an item is fixed and used for another nine months it can reduce the related carbon, water and waste footprints 20-30%.

The average person uses 540 plastic bags every year, that’s one pound of plastic that never degrades and could be eaten by marine life.

Plastic sandwich bags are 100% avoidable. I have not bought plastic sandwich bags in years and never have felt like I needed one. The uses for these bags are usually storing dry or wet food. Storing dry food I use cloth napkins, I made scrap fabric cloth bags for sandwiches or use my mesh produce bags, they’re perfect for storing fresh popcorn. What happened to containers? Everyone got so obsessed with not doing dishes they just forgot containers and grab a plastic bag. I have so many ex peanut butter jars that I use to store everything. If I want to bring a sandwich out and about with me and don’t want to carry a container or napkins all day I use old bread bags or something like it. I can throw these away after without feeling guilty and my plastic waste is used more than what it’s purposed for.

To store wet things I use any container (those empty peanut butter, hummus or salsa containers) or I have one silicone bag for on the go. I got the silicone bag originally so I could bring salads up the ski mountain for a much cheaper lunch without a mess in my pocket or a bulky container but now I use it more often for tofu marinades. It’s perfect for marinades as the liquid is evenly distributed. I do use the silicone bag quite a bit but one is good for my two person household.

There is no need to buy fancy new things to achieve zero waste. Making cloth bags out of ripped clothes or unused material is super easy and gives purpose to things that might not have. Saving old containers might not look uniform or fancy but the more times an item is used the more healthy for the earth it becomes.
